Building Instacart’s shopper workforce through social

Empowering Riders In The New Normal

Over a decade ago, Instacart introduced a new model for online grocery shopping and convenient home delivery. Since then, their simple solutions for retailers, customers, brands, and shoppers have transformed how the world shops, eats, and lives.

As a 4-sided marketplace, Instacart relies on over half a million gig workers to supply deliveries for their customers’ ever-expanding shopping needs.

To maintain this supply, we were asked to create paid Facebook and Instagram ad campaigns to acquire more Instacart shoppers while lowering costs at scale.

We partnered with Instacart’s performance marketing and in-house brand teams to iterate on past high-performing social ads, as well as generate new concepts to engage shoppers while aligning with Instacart’s brand.

We knew success would be dictated by our ability to integrate directly into Instacart’s existing workflow and approval processes in order to efficiently move through multiple rounds of stakeholder reviews. Each week our team would sprint on two new creative briefs—this system gave us the flexibility to pivot as needed to maintain a steady stream of assets for testing and optimization.

In 11 months, we worked on 65 briefs and delivered a total of 393 assets—136 of which were videos. That’s an average of 8 new assets produced each week.

Results

Using these social ads combined with a rigorous testing strategy, we were able to significantly lower Instacart’s cost per acquisition for new shoppers.

The insights we gained from our incrementality testing ultimately resulted in an 84% increase in conversion rates through Lyft’s paid media campaigns.
