Crafting strategy for a contest of global proportions

Designing an Award for a New Age of Marketing   

The Google Partners team supports agencies, channel partners and other companies who provide advertisers with Google ad products like text, display, shopping, video and mobile. A global awards program for their Premier Google Partners was right up our alley — we provided central marketing support for the contest to encourage Google Partners worldwide to do more with Google Ads.

Google wanted its award contest to shine a bright spotlight on their best work and keep those Partners cranking.

Our embedded team at Google started by getting agreement on key program elements: award categories that resonate with Partners and align with Google philosophy and goals, as well as metrics and judging criteria. This meant independent strategic thinking, with alignment with sales and marketing stakeholders across the globe, to create a roadmap for the program.

With our map in hand, we got started on planning: What experience would Partners find useful and compelling?

We defined assets and messaging elements to support this experience, and created project plans for a wide set of deliverables: web sites, emails, direct mails, trophy prototypes, and more. Then we turned on the gas with our creative team and got busy.

We coordinated program details and marketing assets for 14 regional contests, managed the judging process for more than 1,500 applicants, and developed marketing communications to applicants, finalists, and winners. Whew.

Results

Results

The program launched with sites and emails in 13 languages. Two months later, we had received over 1,500 applications — 30% more than the previous year. Ultimately we created 400 assets to bring Partners into the contest, and over 2,000 more assets to help finalists and winners share their excitement. And we even set up the Google team with recommendations for the next year’s awards program assets and operations.
