'Energy' Music Video and curriculum for the History through Hip Hop program

The Mural Music & Arts Project (MMAP) is a non-profit that aims to educate, empower and inspire youth through the arts. One of their programs called History through Hip Hop (HHH) promotes social change by employing youth to create, perform and exhibit art and to activate and mobilize community. Through a project-based, thematic curriculum that meets California Visual and Performing Arts Standards, youth investigate historic barriers to access, learn contemporary issues in society, music and media, and design strategies to bring equity through their art.

Our pro-bono partnership with MMAP partnered with the teenagers in the HHH program to produce professional-quality outputs, including music videos, for the 2015 cohort. The cohort was composed of disadvantaged youth from East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park and Redwood City. The aim of the HHH program is to show them what they were capable of creating with hard work, and to give them a foundation upon which to pursue their music career aspirations.

Ready State partnered with Winokur Studios and Umlaut films to teach the program participants how to storyboard, direct, shoot and produce a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) music video. Each year, the program participants have to write and perform a number of tracks, including one that tackles STEM topics. This year the track was about Energy.

Their tracks are featured on Spotify and Soundcloud, and the STEM music videos are being played in 6th grade classrooms at various Californian schools within partner school districts to inspire youth to take interest in STEM education and to apply to the HHH program.
